good news

British scientists have made a discovery that could help many men with prostate cancer live longer. They created a new type of immunotherapy that helps the body’s immune system fight the cancer and delays resistance to hormone treatment.

For many men with prostate cancer, the first treatment is usually androgen deprivation therapy (ADT). This treatment works well at first, but sometimes the cancer becomes resistant to it. While immunotherapy has worked well for other cancers, it hasn’t been as effective for prostate cancer until now.

Researchers from the University of Sheffield found that a type of white blood cell called a macrophage builds up in tumors during ADT treatment. They developed a way to use tiny particles (nanoparticles) to deliver a drug that boosts the immune system in these cells. This drug helps other immune cells, called T cells, to kill cancer cells. When used with ADT, it slows down the cancer’s resistance to treatment.

Professor Claire Lewis, who led the study, is excited about the results and hopes to start clinical trials soon.

Every year, about 52,000 men in the UK are diagnosed with prostate cancer. The Daily Mail has been advocating for better diagnosis and treatment of this disease for over 20 years.
